The Practice · 緣起
What it is, plainly
In this orthodox deliverance rite, the priest invokes Tai Yi Jiu Ku Tian Zun (the Heavenly Worthy who Saves from Suffering) and the saints of the Ten Nether Courts, dissolving the sins and grievances of souls trapped in darkness and knotted by karma, guiding the departed and ancestral souls out of the three bitter paths, elevating them to a good rebirth - a grace that benefits both the dead and the living.
For the departed, lifetimes of sin are dissolved and grievances settled, freeing the soul from hunger and cold; obsessions and stagnation are cleared so the soul no longer lingers among the living. For the living descendants, filial devotion accrues great virtue - nightmares, weakness and declining luck dissolve, dark interference is cut off, and the household fortune grows smooth.
