Taiyi, Heavenly Savior from Suffering

太乙救苦天尊

The great savior of Taoist liturgy, riding a nine-headed lion. When his name is chanted, he descends to rescue the suffering — including the dead, whom he leads out of the dark realms to the Paradise of Eastern Joy.

A prince who left his palace to cultivate the Tao on Mount Wudang, attaining immortality after decades of ascetic practice. The great Taoist mountain complex of Wudangshan is devoted to him, and he is depicted with sword drawn beneath the northern stars.
