Renters sign leases on whatever day the landlord names. Homeowners often have a two-week window and a moving truck already booked. Somewhere in that window there is an auspicious moving date, and finding it is a subtraction problem rather than a lucky draw.
入宅 and 移徙 are two different dates
The traditional almanac lists them separately, and the distinction matters. 移徙 covers the physical transfer: carrying furniture, boxes, and bedding from one address to another. 入宅 is the formal entry into a new home — the first time the household, in the ritual sense, lives there.
In practice a household may move on one date and hold the entry rite on another, sometimes a week apart. If only one date is available, most practitioners treat 入宅 as the one to protect and let the truck run a day earlier.
What the almanac will not tell you
A printed almanac marks each day as suitable or unsuitable for movement. It cannot know two things: who you are, and which direction you are going.
The who is your birth data. Days that clash with your year branch (沖) are removed, and the hour of the actual arrival is chosen against your day pillar. The direction is the compass bearing from the old door to the new one. A day that is excellent for one household can be actively poor for another household moving on the same afternoon to the same building.
This is why two neighbours moving into identical flats on the same day can report completely different first months, and why a generic calendar app cannot answer the question.
What gets checked, in order
The reading runs through a fixed sequence:
- Month viability. Days marked 月破 and 歲破 are struck first. Nothing overrides a broken month.
- Personal clash. Any day whose branch clashes with the household's year branches is removed.
- Directional conflict. The bearing of the move is compared against the day's 三煞 and 五黃 positions.
- Hour window. From the surviving days, an hour is selected for the entry itself, usually mid-morning, avoiding the 子 and 午 extremes.
- Fallback. If the entire available window is poor, the reading returns the least harmful combination plus a mitigation — a specific order of entry, or a short ritual performed at the old door before departure.
What the online reading returns
The temple's booking flow asks for the household's birth data, the two addresses, and the date range you are actually able to move in — a lease deadline or a truck booking, not a wish. It returns a ranked shortlist of days, the hour to enter, the direction to face on arrival, and which items should enter the home first.
The order of entry is not decoration. Bedding and the rice container traditionally go in before furniture, because they represent rest and provision. Moving the mattress in last, on a date chosen for a different purpose, is the most common mistake the reading corrects.
Three preparations worth doing regardless
- Clear before you carry. Sweep and, in the traditional sequence, scatter a little salt or rice at the four corners before furniture arrives. This is done to the empty house, not the loaded one.
- Enter with both hands full. The first person through the new door should carry something substantial. Arriving empty-handed is the one detail almost every family forgets.
- Turn on every light. On the first evening, all lights in the new home stay on for several hours. The reason given is practical as much as symbolic: an unfamiliar house should not be met in the dark.
When to skip the reading
If the move is temporary, if the lease is under three months, or if the household treats the address as a transit point rather than a home, the traditional answer is that a date reading adds little. The rite is for a place you intend to live in.
For renters who simply want the quick version, the free tools include a calendar check that flags the worst days in any month, and the booking page shows current turnaround before you commit. Households moving with an altar, a business address, or a parent relocating in with them usually need the full reading, which the consultation tier covers, and reviewers of past readings have left their own notes under the booking FAQ.
