Five Emperors Coins: A Feng Shui Wealth Practice

A young couple in Singapore once showed me the small altar by their front door: a red string of five round coins, tied and hung where they could see it every morning. They called it their "emperor money" — a string of Five Emperors coins. They were not collectors. They simply believed the coins helped the household keep what it earned.

That small string is one of the oldest Feng Shui wealth cures still in daily use. In this article we look at where the Five Emperors coins come from, how a working cure is actually assembled, where it belongs in a home, and — just as important — what it cannot do for you.

Where the coins come from

The set is built from the circulating coins of the first five Qing dynasty emperors whose reigns were long and stable: Shunzhi, Kangxi, Yongzheng, Qianlong, and Jiaqing. Collectors value the coins for their metal and age; in Feng Shui the appeal is different. Each coin carries the reign mark of an emperor whose era was, by popular memory, orderly and prosperous. The idea is that a run of stable reigns, strung together, carries a steady signal of continuity.

The coins are round with a square hole — a shape that mirrors the old Chinese view of heaven (round) resting over earth (square). That geometry is not decoration. It is the cure's core image: heaven's flow moving through a grounded center.

How the cure is built

A proper string is five coins in chronological reign order, threaded on red cord. Red is the color of activation and protection in the tradition. The square holes are aligned so the coins face the same way; a jumble of flipped coins is read as a jumble of intent.

You will see versions with more coins, with tassels, or sealed in a pouch. Those are variations. The minimal, classical form is the five-coin string. Quality matters less than arrangement: the coins should be genuine circulation pieces if you can find them, but a clean cast copy still carries the symbolic pattern.

Placement that actually works

Placement follows the same logic as any Feng Shui cure: put it where energy enters and where it tends to leak. The two common spots are behind the main door (to catch and hold incoming Qi) and in the wealth corner of a room — the far left corner from the entrance. A string can also sit in a wallet or cash drawer, close to the money it is meant to steady.

The point is not superstition about the metal. It is attention. A coin string you walk past every morning is a daily reminder to handle money with care, to close open loops, to stop leaks. The cure works partly because it changes the person, not only the room.

Qi, not magic

The tradition behind the coins is the same one behind the whole art of arranging space. Read how vital energy moves through a home — Qi is the energy that flows through a house the way air moves through a room. When Qi enters, circulates, and leaves gently, a space feels alive; when it stagnates, the same space feels heavy. A coin string is a focus object for that flow, not a spell.

If you want the broader frame, start with the basics of the art itself. The practice of Feng Shui is less about trinkets than about light, air, clear sight-lines, and fixing what is broken. The coins are one small instrument inside that larger practice.

What the coins are not

They are not a substitute for a budget. They do not reverse a bad lease or a failing business on their own. Treat the string as a steadying symbol, not a financial engine. Used honestly, it supports discipline; used as a wish, it quietly disappoints.

A small daily habit

Hang the string where you will see it at the start of the day. Once a week, wipe the coins and check one money habit — an unpaid bill, a forgotten subscription, a drawer of receipts. The cure asks for almost nothing; the habit asks for a little. Together they keep the household's attention where its wealth actually lives.
