What it is, plainly
Space cleansing - also known as 'settling the dwelling' - is a long-inherited Taoist rite of pacifying a home. Houses and offices alike can hold on to yin energy, hostile sha qi and turbid qi - left behind by long vacancy or previous occupants, stirred up by renovation works, or accumulated over years of living - forming a stagnant negative field that leaves people restless, sleepless and dream-troubled, with fortunes low and business sluggish.
Through altar-setting and scripture chanting, the sprinkling of consecrated water, smoke fumigation and the sealing of the space, the rite washes away lingering turbid energy and dark disturbance, settles the guardian spirit of the dwelling, and restores a clean, flowing field in which people and place are each at ease.

Altar & scripture
An incense table is set and scriptures such as the Mantra of Cleansing Heaven and Earth are chanted, summoning the upright energies of heaven and earth.
Consecrated water & fumigation
A willow branch dipped in consecrated water sprinkles the whole space - corners, lintels, window frames and dark corners - and sandalwood and mugwort are burned to fumigate the rooms.
Sealing the space
Sacred steps and mudras are performed and talismans charged to guard the doors and windows; the earth god and the dwelling's guardian spirit are announced and honored.

Sacred steps and mudras are performed and talismans charged to guard the doors and windows; the local earth god and the dwelling's guardian spirit are announced and honored, settling and protecting the home.
